Could Relate Well with Script of ‘Pink’: Andrea Tariang

If Amitabh Bachchan-starrer “Pink” created a flutter last year with its content that challenged rigid social concepts, actress Andrea Tariang, who impressed one and all with her performance in the Bollywood film, feels it the relatable nature of the script that drew her despite linguistic barriers.

“I was not fluent in Hindi so when my dad called me I did laugh. But when I did decide to go for the auditions anyway, they gave me like a few lines to read and they were in Hindi. It took me really long to figure out four lines,” Andrea, who played the role of one of three girls around whom Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s film revolved, said while speaking at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet on Friday.

“But then, when I read the entire script it was really gripping to me. Most women have experienced what we went through in the film, if I am right. So I could relate very well,” Andrea said.

The northeast actor, also a guitarist, said she took immense pride in being able to represent the region in a field where not many from that belt get a chance to strut their stuff.

“I was happy to represent the northeast. Because everyone knows many in the northeast are not given a chance to do what I got to do. So, I am really proud that I am able to represent them. It’s close to my heart that I don’t think if I had to do another film it would top this.”

Chowdhury, who hails from West Bengal, revealed the reason why the performances of his actors looked too real in reel. “I told people to feel humiliated. I just did not want the scenes to look fake and was apprehensive. There were scenes which went overboard, but that was required.”

Mizoram Says No to Himachal Monkeys

There are no takers for Himachali monkeys as after Nagaland, Mizoram has also expressed their unwillingness to accept the simians that the hill state is hoping to translocate to the Northeast.

The Deputy Conservator of Forest (HQR), Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Mizoram), C. Lalbaika, has informed an NGO that the state has already expressed its unwillingness to Himachal to accept monkeys.

“Since we have our own thriving population of monkeys, we are not in a position to transport them from Himachal,” he wrote to Principal Chief Wildlife Warden and Chief Wildlife Warden. Himachal has also written to Sikkim and Meghalaya to allow transportation of some of its monkeys to their states.

Mizoram provided this information in response to a query from Humane Society International, which has been opposing the translocation of monkeys from HP to Northeast. The Chief Wildlife Warden of Nagaland, Satya Prakash Tripathi, in a letter dated November 29, 2016 told the Principal Chief Conservator (Wildlife) Himachal that they are not in a position to allow the translocation of monkeys.

As such hopes of HP to get rid of some of its monkeys have been dashed with none of the Northeastern states responding in the affirmative. The Humane Society International had also written to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change against such a move.

Jammu and Kashmir: Yet another avalanche hits army post in Kupwara district's Machil sector

At least five soldiers are feared to have been trapped in an avalanche that hit an army post in the Machil sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district. 

Rescue operations by the Indian Army are currently underway. This is the fourth avalanche in the Valley in less than a week.

Supreme Court rejects petition seeking complete ban on cow slaughter

The Supreme Court of India on Friday rejected a plea seeking the complete ban on cow slaughter in all states across India.

According to ANI, the Supreme Court has said that it had already passed orders on measures to stop the illegal interstate transportation of cattle. This move came after at least 36 bodies of beef dealers from Maharashtra approached the Apex Court challenging the ban.

During the last week, the Apex court had stayed the July 2016 judgment of the Himachal Pradesh high court, which directed the Centre to enact a law prohibiting cow slaughter.

Terming cow slaughter as a policy matter and the “issue is beyond the domain of judicial decision”, the Delhi High Court had refused to entertain a petition seeking enactment of a law prohibiting cow slaughter in December 2015.

During last August, Bombay High Court had struck down two sections of Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act which criminalised possession of beef, the meat of animals slaughtered outside the state, but the court had upheld the ban on slaughter of bulls and bullocks in the state.

Cow slaughter has become a political tool for BJP, especially when the elections approach, to polarise the votes in favour of the party.

Man arrested for raping sister-in-law in Odisha

Odisha police today arrested a person on charges of raping his relative sister-in-law in Mayurbhanj district.

According to reports, the accused, identified as Laxman Murmu of Kendhuamundi village under Khunta police limits, had accompanied the victim while she was returning from nearby Shilaghati weekly market on January 7.

Taking opportunity of the vacant road, Laxman allegedly raped her and threatened not to disclose the matter before anybody.

The victim did not keep her mouth shut and brought the matter to village committee following which a meeting was called to settle it.

However, Laxman did not appear before the village committee.

Later, the victim filed a written complaint at Khunta police station regarding the ordeal.

Police registered a case (No. 7/17) and forwarded the accused to court after arresting him today.
