Snake steals, eats fish caught by fisherman

An Iowa fisherman thought his fishing outing Monday would be pretty typical: Catch some fish, keep them or throw them back in the water.
But Bob Howard, 54, was so startled when a "huge" water snake latched on to his line that he almost dropped his fishing pole.A water snake came up and snagged a fish Bob Howard, of Boone, Iowa, caught while fishing at Rathbun Lake in Appanoose County, Iowa, on Monday, July 3, 2017.
"I thought, 'Uh oh. This is bigger than I thought,' " Howard said Thursday.
Howard, of Boone, Iowa, was fishing on Rathbun Lake in Appanoose County, Iowa, in the southern part of the state. He said the snake had come up from the water a few times before its surprise attack.
It was breakfast time.
"It came up and I hit it on the top of the head with my pole to get it to go away," Howard said. "He went under the water then he came up close to me.
"He just kept annoying me."
What the snake was doing though, Howard said, was following his fishing bobber. The snake got close enough to where Howard's fishing stringer was located near a little rock pile he set up.
Then a fish went for Howard's bait and his bobber sank into the water. He reeled in his catch.
"The snake just came out of nowhere and snatched it," Howard said.
Howard said he thought the snake was at least 6 feet long, noting that it "was as long as me.
"Some of him was still in the water," Howard said.
Howard and the snake had a brief tug of war for the fish. The snake eventually won the battle, Howard said.
Fortunately, Howard had a camera handy and took pictures during the clash.
"He was just real aggressive," Howard said of the snake. "He knows that bobber is going to bring in food."
Karen Kinkead of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the snake appears to be a northern water snake.
"They are not venomous, but they are not as likely as other snakes to move away from people," said Kinkead in an email. "They may be a little more likely to bite if you try to handle one.
"They will eat about any animal small enough to swallow that they can catch."
According to Herpnet.net, it is illegal to kill or collect this snake type by law in Iowa.
The northern water snake, which ranges in length from 24 to 42 inches, is one of the state's most commonly seen snakes and can be found in nearly every waterway and are usually seen while fishing.

Teen jumps to death; police probe 'Blue Whale' challenge angle

A 14-year-old boy has allegedly ended his life by jumping off a building here and police were probing if the incident is linked to 'Blue Whale' suicide challenge as his friends were discussing the online game.

The Class 9 student jumped off the fifth floor of the building in Sher-e-Punjab area of suburban Andheri at around 5 pm on Saturday, the police said today.

A person, who was standing near the building at the time of the incident, alerted the police.

The police were yet to find the reason behind the extreme step and trying to ascertain if it was anyway related to the online game.

"The teenager's friends were chatting on social media groups about his death being linked to the Blue Whale online suicide challenge game. But, we are yet to examine his mobile phone and social media groups where he was active," a senior police official said.

'Blue Whale', the online game which originated in Russia, starts by asking participants via social media to draw a blue whale on a piece of paper, the police said.

The participants are then asked to carve the whale onto their body. The participants and given other tasks, like watching horror movies alone, they explained.

According to media reports, the tasks also include harming oneself and waking up at unusual hours.
"Police were probing if the death is related to Blue Whale suicide challenge," Milind Khetle, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Meghwadi Division), told PTI.

Police are making enquiries with his friends and some members of social media groups in this connection, he said.

"We could not meet his family members as they have gone to Nashik to perform post-death rituals," he said.

The police will also examine the teenager's mobile phone and other gadgets as part of probe to know the exact reason behind the suicide, Khetle said. The Meghwadi police have registered a case in the matter and probing the reason behind the suicide, Deputy Commissioner of Police Navinchandra Reddy said.

Flood toll touches 53, S Salmara worst hit

Naresh Mitra | TNN | Jul 15, 2017, 03:03PM IST

Assam floods: 44 killed, 17 lakh affected
GUWAHATI: The death toll in floods rose to 53 on Friday with three more bodies retrieved from Dhemaji, Dhubri and Nagaon districts.

However, the overall flood situation improved slightly with the number of affected people coming down to 14,97,352 on Friday from 17.43 lakh on Thursday. At present, 25 districts covering 2,240 villages are reeling from floods and nearly 80,000 hectares of cropland are still under water. Over 25,000 people have taken shelter in various relief camps in the affected districts.

As on Friday, South Salmara district in lower Assam is the worst hit with over 3 lakh people battling with the deluge, followed by Morigaon where over 2 lakh people have been hit.
The prospect of more floods looms large with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing above the danger mark in several places of the state. The Kushiyara river in Karimganj district is also flowing above the danger mark.

On Friday, chief chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had a meeting with NF Railway general manager Chahatey Ram here for taking the help of railways to transport relief materials for the affected people. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu had already instructed the Railways to to assist the state government in dealing with the situation.

Ram has promised that the NF Railway would extend all possible help to the administration to restore communication links snapped due to floods. Union power minister Piyush Goyal also assured of helping Sonowal.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday visited the flood-hit Lakhimpur district and interacted with people. He has asked the district administration to ensure that all the affected people get adequate relief materials, including baby food. The governor also asked the district administration to provide sufficient doctors and para-medical staff for camp inmates.

The scale of damage to infrastructure has increased with new embankments, roads, bridges and culverts getting washed away in the last few days. Many places are still cut off from rest parts of the state after roads and bridges were damaged. Even as floodwaters showed a receding trend, erosion is continuing to a pose threat to human lives and properties.

Dhola-Sadiya: India’s Longest Bridge Can Withstand a 60-Tonne Battle Tank

India’s longest river bridge, capable of withstanding the weight of a 60-tonne battle tank, will be inaugurated in Assam close to the border with China on May 26 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the inauguration of the 9.15-km-long Dhola-Sadiya bridge over the Brahmaputra river, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will start the celebrations of the NDA government’s three years in office from this eastern-most part of Assam.

It is 3.55 km longer than the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai, making it the longest bridge in India. The bridge is seen as an attempt by India to shore up its defence requirements along the Sino-Indian border, particularly in the northeast, besides providing easy access to the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam with air and rail connectivity.

“The prime minister will dedicate the strategically important bridge to the nation on May 26. It will bolster the road connectivity in the Northeast as the bridge will be used by people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh besides defence forces extensively,” Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told PTI.

The construction of the bridge began in 2011 at a project cost of Rs. 950 crore. The design is such that the bridge can withstand the movement of military tanks. “Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have huge strategic value to the country. Since the bridge is located close to our border with China, it will help quick movement of military troops and artillery in times of conflict,” Mr Sonowal said.

The bridge is located 540-km away from Assam’s capital Dispur and 300 km away from Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar. The aerial distance to the Chinese border is less than 100 km. After Kaliabhomora bridge near Tezpur, there is no bridge over the Brahmaputra for the next 375 km upstream till Dhola, where the new bridge is constructed. Currently, all transportation between the river’s two banks is carried out through water only.

The bridge, when opened for the public, will cut down the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by as much as four hours. As there is no civilian airport in Arunachal Pradesh, this bridge will help people of the state to reach the nearest rail head in Tinsukia and the airport in Dibrugarh easily.

Mr Sonowal said the delayed works of the bridge was expedited after PM Modi assumed the charge in 2014. The bridge was originally scheduled to open in 2015.

The BJP government in Assam will complete one year in office on May 24. The bridge is one of the key projects of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the Northeast and is built in public-private partnership with a construction company.
