BJP Rejects Charges of Not Giving Tickets to Muslims in Manipur

Rejecting allegations that the party is ignoring Muslims in ticket distribution for the upcoming Assembly polls in Manipur, BJP on Monday said it has selected candidates on the basis of “winnability”.
Claiming that the state has become the most backward in the entire northeastern region due to prolonged Congress rule, BJP Manipur spokesperson O Joy said in order to change the situation, the party has chosen those who would help it come to power in the polls scheduled to be held on March 4 and 8.
“There is no question of communalism in ticket distribution. Our party leaders have focused on winnability as the top priority while deciding candidates,” Joy told PTI. On the allegations that the party has ignored Muslims in ticket distribution, he said, “That is absolutely untrue.”
Joy further said, “The reality is that Congress has been ruling the state for a long time but today Manipur is the most backward state in the northeastern region. We need a political transformation in the state for which we need candidates who will win us seats.”
The priority for BJP is to lead Manipur to the path of growth and improve the situation as a whole, he said, adding “once that is achieved all the communities will develop together. There is no question of sectarianism.” Muslim ticket aspirants of the BJP in the upcoming polls in the state had expressed disappointment that they have been ignored with even the party’s state unit president of Minority Morcha failing to get the nod.
Out of a total of 17 aspirants who had sought party tickets to contest in five different assembly seats, so far only one — Md Anwar Hussain — has been given the green signal to be the candidate from Lilong — a constituency with the largest Muslim population in the state. The party has so far announced the first list of candidates from 31 out of a total of 60 seats in the state.

PM Modi asks for 'comfortable majority' in Goa, says some opposition parties have accepted defeat

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi+ on Saturday promised to make Goa India's most "comfortable" state, if its voters give the BJP a "comfortable" majority in the upcoming assembly polls+ .

PM Modi asks for 'comfortable majority' in Goa, says some opposition parties have accepted defeato hit out at opposition parties, saying some of them had already accepted defeat in the upcoming polls, and were now searching for excuses.

He dared the Opposition to fight the polls on the development plank, instead of raking up minor issues like the advancement of the Union budget and election dates.

"The Opposition parties are working overtime, more than the efforts put in by Finance Minister to prepare the Budget, to criticise the advancement of the budget date. It is an indication that these parties have accepted defeat in the forthcoming polls," he said at a rally in Goa's capital Panaji.

"Though the union budget is going to be presented on February 1, some political parties are already making graphs to criticize the government, without even having an idea of the budgetary provisions," he said.

Modi also weighed in on an objection "a political party (a reference to the Aam Aadmi Party)" had raised against simultaneous polls in Punjab and Goa.

"A political party even went ahead and alleged that the PMO (Prime Minister's Office) put pressure on the Election Commission to hold elections on the same day for these two states. The system has to be respected and strengthened. But some people take pride in devaluing it," the PM said.

Modi promised that the Centre will work "shoulder to shoulder" with the Goa government for the state's development. He said the BJP will create the best infrastructure in Goa for tourists as well as locals.

"My government in New Delhi has given more to Goa in last 25 months than what the state received from the Centre in last 50 years. There have been some facilities provided, such as visa on arrival, and Goa is a major beneficiary of such facilities," he said.

"With minimum investment, tourism sector can prosper. Tourism also helps a cross-section of the society by creating jobs."

The PM also criticized the previous UPA government at the Centre.
