Reliance Jio to Take on Uber, Ola in India With App-Based Taxi

Reliance Jio cabs could soon rival Uber in India? (Photo: The Quint)
Reliance Jio is lining up its fleet of app-based cabs in India with reports suggesting Jio will compete with Ola and Uber in the coming months – say hello to Jio Cabs. As reported by FactorDaily, the company will unleash its cab division with 600 taxis to be rolled out in the country.
Jio has long been mooted to make the best of its payment service, Jio Money, by attaching it to a cab-based service like Ola and Uber. But when Uber and Jio partnered to utilise Jio Money for consumers, the industry expected Jio Cabs to be put on the backburner.
However, this unexpected development suggests that Mukesh Ambani and co. had other ideas, especially following their Jio Prime feature that lets existing Jio users get 4G internet at Rs 10 per day.
The launch of Jio Cabs is likely to be announced once Jio 4G’s official roll-out in April pans out in the way Reliance expects it to. Asking users on Jio to pay for its service comes as a break from the Jio monotony after dishing out free services on the network for more than 9 months.
We could not verify the report with Reliance Jio, as their communications team was unavailable at the time of publishing. We will update the piece with their response if we receive it.
