While the state of Rajasthan has produced valiant kings like Maharana Pratap on one hand, it has also seen the reign of kings whose only claim to fame was their weird whims and luxurious lifestyle more than anything else.
The colorful nature and cynicism of King Kishan Singh of Bharatpur (born Oct.4, 1899) is well known all over the world. He had not one, two or four, but 40 queens in total. Diwan Jaramani Das in his book 'Maharaja' has described one incident of Kishan Singh's notorious habit. He loved bathing with his wives in a swimming pool at night, naked.
Jaramani Das has documented that Kishan Singh was very fond of swimming. To fulfill this passion, he would go any lenghts. He commissioned a large pool of pink marble to be built near his palace. The pool had a staircase of sandalwood to enter. Twenty sandalwood sticks were placed in such a way that two queens could stand on one stick on either side, and he could stand in between easily.
